I hope that Elgato is working on this issue since not every Mac user wants to use an unofficial version of Safari.

Solution: use the builds of Webkit.

PlaceTagger for iOS with Dropbox support

return7 released an update for PlaceTagger for iOS (version 2.1.0). The new version of PlaceTagger supports Dropbox now and there is an option to disable iCloud sync.

The first thing I made right after the update is that disabled iCloud sync. I had some troubles with the previous version of PlaceTagger for iOS. For some reason the iCloud sync did not work.

I asked return7 on Twitter if I could disable iCloud sync and if a Dropbox support is in plan.

@cahuk We’re talking about implementing @dropbox support, yes
— return7 (@return7) May 19, 2013

I am very glad that they integrated Dropbox into PlaceTagger for iOS.

I hope there will be an update of PlaceTagger for Mac that will support Dropbox sync. For now, you have to import the .gpx file into the Mac app otherwise you won’t have your geotagging data in your photos.

ANNOUNCE: Wayland Live CD that starts directly to Wayland

ANNOUNCE: Wayland Live CD that starts directly to Wayland

NeXT

NeXT:
(via Instapaper)

Apple, photos.
I agree.

PlaceTagger

I started using PlaceTagger for iOS and Mac for geotagging my pictures from Nikon D90. There is an original Nikon GPS unit but is costs too much and you must mount it on the flash mount to use it. Not practical at all.

It is sold separate for 4,5 EUR iOS and Mac respectively but I could not find a better app for iOS with a cool design. Yes, I know, functions are more important but I saw some alternatives and was not satisfied with their design.

PlaceTagger for iOS uses iCloud to sync the geolocation data with the Mac app but for some reason PlaceTagger for Mac will not read my data from iCloud. I do not know if it is iCloud’s or PlaceTagger’s fault but I export now my data from the iOS app over email and add the .gpx files into PlaceTagger on the Mac. It works nice.

Anyway, PlaceTagger is a nice iOS app that has a Mac client to make geolocation tagging more simple.

One new feature would be adding support for Dropbox since iCloud is not a reliable service for now. You would only authorise both apps for using Dropbox and the Mac app could read the geolocation data stored on Dropbox. Simple. No need for emailing (yes, emailing is annoying for me but that is the only way I can use the data for now).

Please don’t buy an SLR if you’ll only use the kit lens – Marco.org

Please don’t buy an SLR if you’ll only use the kit lens – Marco.org:
I take photos with my iPhone 5 for Day One notes and for photo notes.

I also use the iPhones’s camera for scanning my bills and for OCR things with TextGrabber. If you need a scanner app with OCR capabilities, buy TextGrabber. It is a fantastic app and the latest version is very improved.

For everything else (serious photography), I use my Nikon D90. I shoot raw. Most of the time I have AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1.8G DX on it.

I agree with Marco that you should never use the built-in flash. Except when you are outside in a sunny day. Use the built-in flash for fill flash. It does a fantastic job. With f11 or f13. Try it and you will be very satisfied with the result.

Why I don't use the GPL

Why I don't use the GPL:
(via Instapaper)

A Few Thoughts on Cryptographic Engineering: iCloud: Who holds the key?

A Few Thoughts on Cryptographic Engineering: iCloud: Who holds the key?:
(via Instapaper)

Backup strategy by SimplicityBliss

Backup strategy by SimplicityBliss:
Very similar to mine.

How Mailbox Can Make Me A User — The Brooks Review

How Mailbox Can Make Me A User — The Brooks Review:
(via Instapaper)

Offlineimap and some troubles

Before a few weeks offlineimap stopped to work.

I do not know what was the reason for that but after some time of research I found what was wrong.

To make it clear, I am using the “pythonfile=” option in my offlineimaprc config file that enables using the Keychain Access app in OS X because
I do not store any plain text passwords in my config file so the python file which is defined with the option above redirects at every login the Keychain Access app where are stored my passwords.

The error I got every time the last few weeks was:

‘NoneType’ object has no attribute ‘group’.

To make it short, I found out that somehow my login internet passwords from Keychain Access for offlineimap were deleted. How, I do not know buy luckily I found it out running offlineimap with the “-1 -d imap” option. I saw that the login failed and I started looking around what could go wrong and found what went wrong.

If you are using offlineimap for making backups of your email accounts, don’t store any plain text passwords in your config file and use Keychain Access instead.

Here is a great tutorial by Steve Losh for the offlineimap configuration (also for the Keychain Access option).

UPDATE:

Here is a how-to if you want to use gpg instead of Keychain Access.

Find your Google Reader replacement

Find your Google Reader replacement:
Google Reader alternatives.

HandBrake: batch converting and date preserving

HandBrake: batch converting and date preserving:
Use this preset for HandBrake if you want to make a batch conversion with preserving the date of video creation.

A lot of happening around Google Reader

Google announced that it will shut down Google Reader on July 1.

First of all, I thought that I could quit using Google Reader but I was wrong. So I am looking for alternatives. All my feeds are synced through Google Reader. That said, the new alternative that I am going to use must have a sync support for my favourite iOS RSS reader, Reeder. Or vice versa. And for NetNewsWire for Mac.

There is a lot of buzz around Google Reader right now.

Marco Arment says, shutting down Google Reader is excellent news.

One Thing Well very well summarises the uprising alternatives.

Some are thinking about NetNewsWire Cloud.

Disclaimer: NetNewsWire is my favorite RSS reader for Mac. I know that there is a Mac version of Reeder but I had some troubles with it (read: high HDD read spikes). Maybe this is gone since I have an external SSD but I did not run Reeder on my iMac for a few months now.

Do not forget to import your starred posts into Pinboard. Also my favorite bookmarking service.

And for the end: Next time, please pay a fair price for the services you depend on. Dave Winer.

Sorry, but I agree with that. I pay (paid) for every serious service I use: Dropbox, Evernote, Pinboard, Amazon S3, FastMailFM, Instapaper.
